As the Oscar race heats up, and we focus our energies on domineering festival hits like Black Swan, it is also prudent to remember the lesser-known successes that might creep in as an outside victor, much like last year’s The Hurt Locker. Winter’s Bone, released some time ago in the U.S., finally hits U.K. cinemas this week, and while it is likely to be too inaccessible to garner a Best Picture win, it is nevertheless topped by a striking debut performance from young lead Jennifer Lawrence, and is well worth your time.
