Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine came out of the Sundance and Cannes film festivals with a grand heft of plaudits, and its stature on the radar of Oscar-watchers only heightened last week when the MPAA announced that they had slapped it with an NC-17 rating. Don’t become swept up in the furore surrounding the rating; it is a travesty. Rather, bask in the glorious performances from Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, hauntingly portraying how even the most hopeful of relationships can meet a regrettable end.
